Indigenous Education Department Overview
The District Indigenous Education Department aims to create and maintain an environment of high expectations of success for all learners. With the support of educators and staff, the Indigenous Education Department aims to lead each learner to their personal success in intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical being and maximize students' future opportunities in post-secondary education and employment.
We endeavour to create a rich, culturally relevant learning environment with the belief that students learn best in a safe, secure and respectful learning environment supported by connections between school and community, with a strong sense of identity and culture, using the First Peoples’ Principles of Learning.
District Programs are pathways designed to engage our community partners in corridor-wide structures. Indigenous Education Programs will provide all students with opportunities for increased understanding and learning through local First Nation culture and language. These pathways guide our work and are represented in our department strategies outlined below:
- Language revitalization
- Decolonized teaching practices such as place-based learning, inquiry projects, and experiential learning with access points for all students
- Indigenous Leadership programming
