SD48 and Líl̓wat Nation sign Local Education Agreement
On the evening of November 18, 2021, members of the Líl̓wat Nation and the Board of Education School District No.48 gathered at Ts’zil Learning Centre in Mount Currie, BC, for the official signing of the Local Education Agreement between the two parties.
The Local Education Agreement is a contract between School District No.48 and the Líl̓wat Nation to confirm the Parties' mutual commitment and acknowledge the important role of Schools to build a positive, effective, collaborative and constructive relationship to improve the educational outcomes of students of Indigenous ancestry. The work within this partnership will endeavour to achieve high student success, graduation and transition to post-secondary education and training, or employment. Members of the Líl̓wat Nation and School District No.48 formed the Local Education Agreement Steering Committee, a team that worked collaboratively to co-write the Local Education Agreement. Committee members from the Líl̓wat Nation include Yvonne Wallace (Director of Ts’zil Learning Centre), Helena Edmonds (Manager of Advance Education, Ts’zil Learning Centre), Verna Stager (Education Director, Líl̓wat Nation ) and committee members from SD48 include Lisa McCullough (former Superintendent of SD48) and Karen LaRochelle (District Principal of Indigenous Education at SD48). The Local Education Agreement is a 5-year agreement.
The Local Education Agreement demonstrates the ongoing commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and solidarity towards the Calls to Action.
