On May 24h, Indigenous Youth Leadership students, staff, families and elders from Pemberton Secondary School, Xet̓ólacw Community School, Whistler Secondary School and Howe Sound Secondary came together at Pemberton Secondary School on the unceded territory of the Lil'wat Nation honour and celebrate culture at the 24-Hour Drum event. The Board of Education follows a budget development process each school year in order to establish the final annual budget for submission to the Ministry of Education and Child Care. This process begins with providing an opportunity for partners to share input toward decision-making through a survey. The survey will be open for input until November 29, 2024. June is Pride Month, and our district joins in celebrating the resilience and contributions of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. The Sea to Sky School District believes that we are responsible for ensuring all schools are inclusive and safe spaces for students, staff and families of all sexual orientations and gender identities. Let's join together to celebrate diversity and create supportive environments where everyone can thrive! After all, one of our core enduring understandings is that "diversity is a strength." The Safe Access to Schools Act gives the Province the legal authority to prohibit disruptive behaviour that impedes access to school grounds. This includes behaviour such as any protests that causes disruptions to school programs and activities or that cause concern for the physical or mental safety of students and staff. Access Zones are now in place at K-12 schools, and police can arrest or issue tickets to anyone found impeding access, disrupting or interfering with educational activities or attempting to intimidate an individual within 20 metres (66 feet) of school property. These zones will be in effect on school days from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and during extracurricular school activities at all of B.C.’s K-12 public and independent schools, with limited exceptions. May 5 is the National Day of Awareness for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people (MMIWG2S), also known as "Red Dress Day," coined by Métis artist Jaime Black as "an aesthetic response to this critical national issue." The ongoing crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people that we are facing is a direct result of colonization. In Canada, more than six in ten (63%) Indigenous women have experienced physical or sexual assault in their lifetime. The impact of these disproportionately high rates of violence is felt in all areas of life.
