Attendance
![]()
Regular school attendance supports student learning, well-being and a strong sense of connection and belonging at school. Being at school consistently helps students build relationships, develop routines, keep up with their learning and access the supports and opportunities available to them. We also recognize that attending school can sometimes be difficult for many reasons. Health and mental health concerns, family circumstances, transitions, anxiety and other challenges can all affect a student's attendance. When challenges arise, families are encouraged to connect with their school so we can work together to support the student.
Why Regular Attendance Matters
Regular attendance helps students:
- Stay connected to their learning and build on skills from day to day.
- Develop positive relationships with classmates and school staff.
- Build routines, confidence and a sense of belonging.
- Participate in school activities and opportunities.
- Access academic, social-emotional and other school-based supports when needed.
How Schools Support Students
Our schools work to create safe, welcoming and inclusive environments where students feel connected, valued and supported. When attendance becomes a concern, school teams may work with students and families to better understand what is getting in the way and identify appropriate supports. This may include:
- Checking in with students and families when attendance patterns change.
- Developing individualized strategies and supports.
- Providing additional academic or social-emotional support.
- Helping students strengthen connections with trusted adults and peers at school.
- Connecting families with district or community resources when additional support may be helpful.
How Families Can Support Regular Attendance
Parents and caregivers can help by:
- Establishing consistent morning, bedtime and school-day routines.
- Talking positively about school and the importance of attending regularly.
- Encouraging healthy sleep, nutrition and daily routines.
- Scheduling appointments and family vacations outside of school hours whenever possible.
- Staying connected with the school and sharing concerns early.
- Reaching out if your child is experiencing challenges with learning, friendships, mental health or attending school.
When Attending School Is Difficult
Sometimes getting to school—or staying for the entire school day—can be challenging. Changes in attendance can also signal that a student needs additional support. If your child is struggling to attend school regularly, please connect with your child's teacher, principal or school team. Working together early can help identify what is contributing to the challenge and what supports may help your child feel connected, supported and successful at school.
